What do Bill Gates, Nelson Mandela, Elizabeth Taylor and Harry Potter all have in common?

They ALL had a mentor!

Mistakes in business are inevitable and if you’re doing it alone then it’s probably even more likely that you will be making plenty of them. Being an entrepreneur isn’t for everyone and if you want to give yourself the best chance at succeeding then finding a business mentor should be one of your first steps. Many hugely successful entrepreneurs had and still have mentors.

Mark Zuckerberg was mentored by Steve Jobs, Christian Dior mentored Yves Saint Laurent, Warren Buffet mentored Bill Gates & Sir Freddie Laker mentored Richard Branson. If you’re still unconvinced by the benefits of having a mentor, let's talk about the top 5 reasons why finding a mentor will help set you on a path to success.

1. A mentor can help develop your self-confidence and reassure you. A mentor will help you to help you become self-sufficient in a protected way. Your mentor will come with a wealth of experience. This is invaluable to you on your journey and they can reassure you when you are doubting yourself and they will help you to build strategies for affirming a positive message that you can keep telling yourself. Entrepreneurship is lonely and having someone cheering you on from the sidelines will help you to keep going even when the going gets tough.

2. A mentor can help you to widen your network. A crucial part of building any successful business is having a strong network. A mentor will already be invested in your success and will be able to support you by leveraging their network which could well provide you with fantastic opportunities in the early part of your business. Often group coaching introduces you to peers who will also be in the same stage of their journey as you which will widen your network even further.

3. You can read all the books, blogs and articles you can find, but it is unlikely that you will find ALL the experiences that will help shape you as an entrepreneur. These things just aren’t shared in books that way and these are the bits that you really need to hear and learn from. If it was possible to get everything you needed from a textbook then med students wouldn’t work in hospitals as juniors before being considered qualified. It’s that on-the-job experience that isn’t shared in a textbook that helps shape them into skilled Doctors.

4. They can show you how to avoid those avoidable mistakes! Some say you learn from your mistakes, but if you really want to accelerate your growth and success then you need to avoid making those silly mistakes in the business that waste precious time and financial resources. Having an experienced mentor they act as a guide who can show you the way.

Fast forward to your journey by focussing your learning. A mentor isn’t necessarily someone that has all the answers, they are usually someone who is further along in their career than you. When you invest in a mentor you are investing in their knowledge that they have gained over time. They can focus your attention on the things that will really help accelerate your business on a much faster timescale.
